________________________________________________________ SOCASTEE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1978 30TH REUNION
"The Socastee High School Class of 1978 had their 30th High School Reunion at the M-Grand Resort Hotel on the beautiful Grand Strand of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. A mixer was held on Friday night with beverages flowing and conversations of memories of the past, or just a loss of memory -- enough to embarrass the kids and grandkids if they should stumble into the lounge full of 40+ crowd, a.k.a. "old people." Reunion night, a blast from the past, tables were adorned with 8-track tapes, black and gold pom poms and old photographs. Ceramic tiles with pictures of our senior year made by Donna Rice Yon were spaced around the tables with trivia questions at every table from our resident whiz kid Shelly McMahon Brooks. Magazine display tables held artifacts from thirty years ago that included Playboy, General Mechanics and Hot Rod. In other corner displays were memories of high school sports -- an old letter jacket, gym bag, a jersey and basketball uniform. The Graduation table encompassed yearbooks from the past and a cap and gown all dressed up by Kathy Lee Leone who worked hard on getting the things together. A memorial table included those Classmates who could not be with us but were in memory. Barbara Reed made a wall of 1978 album covers. Lois Edgar put together a moving tribute to lost classmates and led our invocation. There was a continuous slide show of reunions past and a few of our teachers were spotted: Lucius Campbell, Janice Singletary Dowe and Helen Edwards. Everyone mingled with food and drinks by a view of the ocean. Vicki D'Anna Levy, Reunion Committee staffer, explained, "The photos in the yearbook and the displays hold many memories for the Class of 78. A lot of thought went into the displays and we hope that the classmates have a chance to reminisce about old girlfriends or boyfriends, the mohawks, the fire that destroyed the school records, and great moments from the games." Then it was downstairs to the showroom. Grads and guests had a chance to relive the 'NewlyWed Game' with host Stan Parker in his 1978 prom attire, score keeper and co-host Shelly was decked out in disco queen finery and Vicki D'Anna wearing a mod dress obviously worn by Carrol from The Brady Bunch TV show. 1978 spokes model Cindi Broome called out the names where classmates got stumped during 'Name that Tune' with songs from 1978 such as "Jetairliner" "Hotel California" and "Boogie Oggie Oggie" with Pam Addison Rhodes taking the prize. Jeff Zachary, Host of 'Name That Tune', sported his baby blue tux with black velvet trim and 2 inch platform shoes. Aundra Watson, in a 70's prom dress sang a couple of demonstration tunes in the final round "Name Those Lyrics." New Class of 78 Superlatives were announced as each recipient came up on stage to receive their prizes -- some of those were: fertilizer sticks for shortest classmates, mini fans for most likely to have hot flashes, knee pads and Listerine strips (um....I know what they're for but what was the Title of the Superlative ?), a sign for 'free broom rides' for Cindi Broome and new balls to the Class of 78 Sports Superstars to replace their old balls. Rogaine was given out to appropriate parties. Our stage was dressed by a huge brave banner painted by Michael Gay. The highlight of the evening was viewed on the big screen with a tribute video of our senior year and reunions of the past. The introduction was given by the host of TV's "America's Most Wanted," John Walsh, wondering why no one from Socastee High School has ever been on his show. Our class president, Steve D'Adamo who sported SHS jersey #30, the same jersey he wore while beating rival teams 30 years ago, addressed the group explaining only jury duty and the threat of jail kept him away. Then the long awaited music video remake "CARWASH" played as classmates bent over by the pain of laughter seeing other classmate dancing and washing cars choreographed to the original Rose Royce classic. During the night, no one fell over the bacony rails and security was only called once to the late night hospitality suite. The Socastee High School Class of 78 students and guests concluded the weekend with a somber breakfast at a local pancake house and headed out for the long ride home with promises of phone calls and emails to stay in touch. Yes, a great time was had by all. We owe a special thanks to people working behind the scenes handling money, equipment and logistics like Moe Wells and Brian Wester and the whole reunion crew. ************* "Hi Everyone, The reunion was the best ever! Thank you for all the hard work. It was fabulous! Love you to all! " Kris Long (Kelloway) "The reunion weekend was GREAT!!! It was so nice visiting with those that I haven't seen in awhile but I still enjoy catching up with the local folks as well. " Lois Edgar "Yes, this is my first reunion. I am sorry I missed all of the other ones because I'm having a blast!" Mike Gay "Same for me!" Martha Wilhoit "I had to fight Elton John in the parking lot for these platform shoes!" Jeff Zachary during the show dressed in his 1978 prom attire. "Hey John Pinson, the 70's called, they want their holy jeans back!" (Name withheld by request) "Anyone have any reading glasses?" heard as each person read the next superlatives awards. "Let's not wait another five years to have another get together!" IN MEMORIAL; We are all saddened by the death of Robin Tyson. He helped plan the reunion and wanted so much to attend. He lost his fight with cancer but will always be with us when we gather as a class.
AND THE OSCAR GOES TO... Some classmate assembled together for the remake of a music video to "CARWASH" the song from the movie. We do not want to leave anyone out of this cinematic milestone. It's not too late! Send a video tape of you, face or chest up, in your best 1978 or 'CARWASH' attire, singing some of the words to one of the verses and we can add it in. Deadline for submissions September 15th. What better way to embarrass your children!
